Image Capture Interface and Information

In our first video we’re going to take a look at the Image Capture interface where we can view our photo information as well as how we can sort our photos that Image Capture is reading form our camera.

Open Image Capture
Now the first thing you’ll need to do is open Image Capture. This is an application located in your applications folder. One way of getting to your Applications folder when you’re in the Finder is by going up to ‘Go’ in the Menu bar and then selecting ‘Applications’. Select it and your applications folder will open.

Image Capture is located in this folder. Double click on it to open it up. Over on the left, you’re going to see all of your different devices that are plugged in to your Mac. This can include both cameras and scanners.

Viewing Information with Image Capture
So what information can you see when your looking at your photos and videos on your camera through Image Capture? We can see all the data associated with that photo or video that your camera associates with it.

In the video above you’ll see the following with my images and videos:

  • • Photo and Video Name
  • • Photo or Video Kind such as jpg or RAW
  • • Date and Time the photo or video was taken
  • • File Size
  • • Width and Height
  • • Location in Longitude and Latitude
  • • Aperture
  • • Color Space
  • • Focal Length
  • • ISO
  • • If the Flash was used
  • • Camera brand
  • • Camera Model

So with Image Capture, we can see all of the information related to that photo. We can also sort this by clicking on the title above all the data.

Switching Views
If you go down to the bottom, you’re going to see you have two icons. These will change how you are viewing your photos and videos. You can view them in a list view or grid view. You can also change the size of the thumbnails when viewing as a grid.

The last thing I want to mention is this also works with SD cards. So if you have a Mac where you can plug in an SD card, Image Capture will be able to read the images in that SD card.

See this lesson in Action
If you want to see how this in action, I show you how this all works in the video above.
