New iPad Gestures

In this lesson for What’s New on the iPad with iOS 12, we look at the new gestures Apple introduced on the iPad.

Going Back to the Home Screen from an App
When you are in an app and you want to go back to the Home Screen where all your apps are, you can now just swipe up with one finger from the bottom of your iPad to about midway up. You just want to use one gesture while doing this, no pausing, just swipe from the bottom to about midway of your iPad. When you do this swipe, you will be brought back to your Home Screen where all your apps are.

Showing the Control Center
To show the Control Center on the iPad with iOS 12, you now need to swipe down from the upper right-hand corner. When you do this, your Control Center will be shown.

Showing the Notification Center
To show the Notification Center. you now swipe down from the upper left corner of your iPad. When you do this, your Notification Center will open. Swipe back up to close it.

Bringing the Dock Up while in an App
To bring up the Dock while in an app, just swipe up with one finger from the bottom of your iPad. You don’t want to swipe all the way up as that will bring you to your Home Screen, Just swipe up to about where the dock would be and you’ll see your dock show. To hide the dock, just swipe back down on the dock.

Going to the App Switcher
To show all your open apps, you again swipe up from the bottom. This time you want to swipe up above where the dock would be, but not all the way as that would bring you to your Home Screen.

Switching to the previous or Next App
If you want to switch to the previous app, you just swipe up slightly from the bottom – then swipe over to the right. Basically full be making a right angle. When you do this, you’ll be taken to your previous app. To get back to your other app, you can swipe up and then over to the left as well.

It may sound confusing, but once you get these gestures down pat, it’ll become second nature.
