Adding Notes to a Book

In this lesson for the Books app on the iPhone, I look at how to add a note to text you have selected in the Books app on the iPhone.

Selecting Text you want to Add a Note To
To select the text you’d like to add a note to, you first need to select it. To do this, you tap and hold on any one of the words you’d like to add a note to. The word will be highlighted. To increase your selection, drag the two handles on the left or right of the selected word.

Adding a Note to your Selected Text
Once you have selected all the words you’d like to add a note to, you’ll see a menu pop up with various options. One of the options is to add a note to your selected text. Tap on the Note icon and start typing your note. It will be attached to your highlighted text.

Changing the Style or Color of the Highlight of a Note
The highlight style will default to the same type of highlight you used previously when you highlighted text or added a note to text. So if you underlined your text the last time you added a note, it would underline this text. To change the style or color, tap on the first option in the menu that pops up, it will show the last type of highlight by default. Once you tap on it, you can change the color or underline the text.

Seeing if Highlighted Text has a Note
If you’ve added a note to text you’ve highlighted, in addition to seeing the highlighted text, you will also see a note indicator to the right of the highlighted text. To read the note, just tap on the indicator.

Viewing the Pages you have Notes On
To view all the pages you have notes on, tap on the book to bring the tools up. Tap on the three horizontal lines at the top to get to your table of contents, bookmarks, and notes. Tap on Notes to see all the pages you have notes on. This will also show any pages that have highlighted text.

Removing a Note from Selected Text
To remove a note from selected text, just tap on the highlighted text in the book. In the pop-up menu, you’ll see a trash can. Tap on the trash can to remove the highlight and note. If you just want to remove the note and not the highlight, just delete the actual note text.

Adding a Note to Highlighted Text
To add a note to your highlighted text, tap on the text that is highlighted. In the pop-up menu that shows, tap on the Note icon. From there you’ll be able to add a note to your highlighted text.
