Column View and the Column Browser

In this lesson for iTunes on the Mac, we look at how we view our music in columns as well as use the Column Browser to view our music.

Viewing Music in Columns
The first thing you need to do is make sure you are looking at your Music. You can only use the Column Browser while looking at your music. The next thing to do is select Songs. When you do this, all your music will show in columns in iTunes. From here you can sort and rearrange the columns. To for them, just click on the header at the top of the column you want to sort. To rearrange them, just drag the column around by clicking and dragging on the column header.

You can also set what columns are shown. To do this, go to the menu bar, and under View, you’ll see Show View Options. When you select this, a new window will open. In this window, you will see all the columns you can show. Just select the columns you want to display. If you decide to view the artwork, you can select the size of the artwork from this window as well. When you are finished, just close the window, and any changes will be applied.

Column Browser
With the Column Browser, we can select what music we want to show in columns. To use the Column Browser, go up to View in the menu bar. From there select Show Column Browser. You’ll see the interface change. In addition to viewing your music in columns, you’ll see more selections above the columns. In the video, I show Genre, Artist, and Album. If I click on a specific Genre, all the artists in my library will show in the next column. I click on an artist, and all the albums for that artist I have in my library will be displayed.

To change what you can select, as an example let’s say I didn’t want to show genre anymore, I go to View in the menu bar, and under Column Browser, you will see many options. Just select the options you want to show, in my case I would deselect the Genre setting. Once I do that, I will no longer be able to select the genre in the Column Browser.
