Marking Up and Trimming your Screenshots and Recordings

In this lesson for screenshots on the Mac we look at how we can now markup our screenshots and trim our screen recordings using the tools introduced in macOS Mojave.

Marking Up a Screenshot from the Thumbnail
When you take your screenshot, by default it will show for a few seconds as a thumbnail in the lower right corner of your Mac. You set this option under Options in the screenshot toolbar when you use Command-Shift-5. When you click on the thumbnail, it opens up and you can mark it up. You’ll see all the markup tools across the top of your screenshot. When you are finished marking it up, click on Save.

Trimming a Screen Recording from the Thumbnail
If you took a screen recording, when you click on the thumbnail in the lower right corner, you are able to trim it. To trim it, you click on the Trim icon in the toolbar after clicking on the thumbnail. You’ll find it int he upper right corner next to the Done button. When you click not he trimming tool, you are able to trim it by dragging the yellow handles to the left and right. Click on Done when you are finished trimming it.

Marking Up a Screenshot from the File
If you want to markup your screenshot and you didn’t click on the thumbnail, or you do not have it show the thumbnail, then all you need to do is select the file. By default the screenshot file will be on your desktop. Don’t open it, just select it. Then tap the spacebar. Once you do that, you can then click on the markup icon in the toolbar and all the markup tools will show.
