Using the Flash

In this lesson for Photography with the Camera app on the iPhone we look at how we use the flash and we we would want to use it in the daylight as a fill flash.

Flash
The flash icon, where we turn it off and on is located in the upper left corner of your iPhone. You can tell if it is on or off by it having a line through it. If there is a line, the flash is off and will not fire. This is usually how I have my iPhone set as the iPhone does a pretty good job in low light conditions.

If you do want to turn it on, you tap on the icon and then you will see three options. Auto, On, and Off. With Auto, the iPhone will determine if the flash need to go off depending on how dark it is.

You can also use the flash as a fill flash. What is fill flash? This is when you use the flash as fill in lighter conditions. A good example is if the sun is out and your subjects are still dark due to being in a shadow. You can turn on the flash to light up the subject even though it is light out.

The iPhone will also take a look at the ambient light and adjust the flash accordingly. The flash can actually change color to match the lighting. This is all automatic and you can’t adjust this.

So that’s how we use the flash with the camera app on the iPhone.
