Runtastic Pro – My New Running Partner on my Apple Watch

I’ve been wearing the Apple Watch now for several months and one of my favorite features is the Activity and Workout apps. Whenever I go out for a run, I start a workout in the Workout App and go. Saying that, the Workout app is not great. Sure it tells me my heart rate, split times (with iOS 9), active calories, and distance. But it’s not great for looking up your history, you can’t view your route, as well as missing other features I am used to. I used to wear a Garmin watch and I loved how it connected to Garmin Connect and I could look up my past runs easily. This is what Workout was missing for me. I loved the information Workout was giving me while I ran, but that was about it.

Well with watchOS 2 I no longer need to rely on the Workout App when I go for a run! Runtastic Pro is one of the first workout apps that I’ve seen that can receive information from the Apple Watches sensors including heart rate. You can use it for running, biking, walking, and other activities. My experience is with running.

When I start a running activity, I just press the big green button for start and I am off. As I run it is measuring my heart rate, distance, speed, route (as long as I have my iPhone on me), and even filling my activity rings in the Activity app! While running, when I raise my wrist it goes right to Runtastic Pro instead of the clock. In the past if I was using an app other than Workout I had to tell my watch to go to the last app when I raise my wrist. When you are stop your activity, the Apple Watch switches back to its normal mode of displaying the clock when you raise your wrist. While running you can see your heart rate as well as what zone you are in via color bars, total run time, your pace, distance, split times, and music controls.

Once I finish my run, all the data on my Apple Watch syncs with Runtastic Pro on my iPhone. This is probably the best part as I can see a history of all my runs. I select a run from my history and I can see the average pace, route (as long as I had my iPhone with me when I ran), average speed, elevation, average heart rate, max heart rate, dehydration, splits, and even how long I was in fat burning zone (I am trying to lose some weight).

Saying all that, I would like to be able to change what data is being shown on the displays when I am out running like I can with the Workout App. An example would be add the time to the heart rate screen. Overall though I am liking Runtastic Pro and I am happy to say I promoted Runtastic Pro as my new running partner.

Runtastic Pro in the App Store.

Note: I am not affiliated with Runtastic Pro. I am just a fan of how the app is helping me become healthier and a better runner.
