Enhancing and Applying Adjustments

In this lesson for Photography with the Camera app on the iPhone we look at how we can have the iPhone automatically enhance our photos as well as how we can make manual adjustments to them including adjusting the light levels, color levels, and black and white levels.

Auto Enhance
The first thing you’ll need to do is tap on the thumbnail in the lower left corner while in the Camera app. Now tap on Edit. When you do this, you’ll see the auto-enhancing icon in the upper right corner. When you tap on it, it will turn yellow, to indicate your photo is enhanced. What the Camera app does when enhancing is look at the different light levels and adjust them. If you want to compare it to the un-enhanced photo, just tap on the photo. You’ll see ‘Original’ at the top of the photo indicating that it is not enhanced. Let go and the photo will be the enhanced version. To remove enhancing, tape on the icon in the upper right hand corner again.

Making our own Basic Adjustments
To make our own basic adjustments, we tap in the circle at the bottom that has the dots around it. Again, we have to be in edit mode for this to show. When you tap on this, you will see three options – Light, Color, and B&W. To adjust any one of these, just tap on the level you want to adjust, such as Light. When you do this, you’ll see what looks like a film strip with a red line in the center. Drag the red line to the left and right to adjust the light levels. If you chose color or B&W, the red line would adjust those levels instead of light levels.

Making Detailed Adjustments
You can also fine tune or make detailed adjustments. To do that, tap on the 3 horizontal lines to the right of the adjustment name, such a Light. When you tap on these three lines you are able to make individual adjustments to the level you selected.

Adjustable Light Options

  • • Brilliance
  • • Exposure
  • • Highlights
  • • Shadows

  • • Cast

Adjustable B&W Options

To close the adjustments, just tap on Close.

That’s how we enhance as well as adjust the Light, Color and Black & White levels of our photo using the camera app on the iPhone.
